There are two styles of King mattresses available in the United States: King and California King. Down Comforters

Another aspect to consider if the type of fill. Down is a natural filling used in comforters and provides light weight warmth. Types of down include duck down, white goose down, grey goose down, and eiderdown. White good down is the most common type of down used; eiderdown is the rarest and most expensive. A high-quality down comforter will be allergy free, have a high fill power, and a high thread count. A higher-priced King size comforter filled with down reflects higher quality down, not more of it.

The fill power of down indicates the insulation a down king size comforter will provide. It is determined by the amount of space one ounce of down will fill. A king size comforter will 700 plus fill power is very high quality and provides the greatest insulation; from 600 – 700 is excellent quality; while a good quality comforter will have a fill power of 525 – 600 and provide less insulation.

Down Alternatives

Due to allergy concerns and prohibitive pricing, many manufacturers of king size comforters use a down alternative made of spun polyester. Unless the product specifies another material, “down alternative” generally means polyester. The spun polyester is used to fill the king size comforters in place of down, eliminating allergens and providing warmth. Wool comforters are also available, which are allergen-free, lightweight, and “breathe” more than synthetic materials. Silk comforters are also available. For consumers who are allergic to dust and dust mites rather than down, some manufacturers provide a fill of down and milk weed, which traps dust and eliminates dust allergens.
